DC Library Welcomes Everyone Back!!

The DC Library would like to welcome everyone back! We hope everyone had a great summer - maybe time to travel and relax!

We have a lot going on at the library. To note just a few...

- - Library Sessions. Be sure to schedule your library sessions. The Fall semester is typically our busiest time. We will make every effort to get you your preferred day and time. Come by the library or call us at 206-7267.

- - Revised Library Site! Our Library site was just released on Wednesday afternoon, so check it out. Also, due to popular demand our web space in MyPima (look for the Library tab) and our public web space are nearly identical. Check them out and let us know what you think!

- - New Items! As always, new materials came in throughout the summer, so come and check them out!  On a similar note, if you have an item that you would like to have the library add to its collection, that would supplement your course(s), please send us the name, author and year published and we will make every attempt to order it. It takes about 4 weeks for new items to appear on our shelves, so let us know early!

As always, the library is here for your students and you. If there is anything we can do for you, just let us know!

Don't Forget Your Course Reserves...

If you haven't brought your course reserve items* to the library, now is the time to do it! We process items on a first come, first serve basis and to be sure the items are available for your students, we need them as soon as possible. (We do try and get the items processed in 48 hours or less.)

If it is something that you would like available to your students later in the semester, or if you have a late start or 2nd 8-week course, please bring your item(s) in a couple of weeks ahead of time so it can be processed. We are able to put library materials on reserve for short periods of time or for the entire semester.

Course reserves can be any item you would like to be put on reserve in the library for your students. It could be a textbook, supplemental readings, or even a DVD. The item will be available to students during regular library hours, for a two hour period - library use only (unless you note otherwise).

Students will need their Student ID to check the items out.

Of course, if there is anything else the library can help you with - just call us at 206-7267 or stop by!

Reminder - - Get Your Course Reserves in before Winter Break

Here's an easy to-do that you can cross off your list... get your course materials into the library before the Winter Break!

Course reserves are one of the many services the Downtown Campus library offers to its students. What are course reserves? Course reserves are materials (textbooks, reading materials, audio-visual materials) that faculty put on reserve for their students to use during the semester. These items are library use only, with a two hour check-out period. Typically they are textbooks and supplemental items that help those students who don't want to carry their books back and forth from home to school but want to study between classes, or they could be readings and/or AV items, that the instructor wants the students to read/view outside of class.

So far this semester, we have had almost 4500 checkouts of course reserve materials from 42 disciplines!!

If you would like to have items in the library for your students to use for the Spring semester, please bring them to the library before Winter Break. Each item is individually added to our system, which takes some time and by having the item to us before January, it will ensure that those items available to your students the first day of classes!

If you have any questions, please feel free to stop by the library or call us at 206-7267.

Happy Holidays!

Online Access to Arizona Daily Star...

Just wanted to update you on the status of access the Arizona Daily Star online. We know many of you use it in your classrooms, so wanted to give you a heads up.

It appears that the PCC libraries will not have access to America's Newspapers (by NewsBank) this semester.

Due to issues with the vendor, PCC Libraries will be unable to offer access to America's Newspapers (by NewsBank) which provides access to many state newspapers, including the Arizona Daily Start (1991-current), as well as local papers such as La Estella de Tucson and The Explorer.

Full-text articles from Arizona Daily Star (2001-current) are still available through Newspaper Source (by Ebsco), which can be accessed via the Library Home page (www.pima.edu/library or via the library tab in MyPima) >> Magazine, Newspapers, and Journal Articles >> Newspapers >> Newspaper Source. Older issues of the Arizona Daily Star going back to 1870 are available on microfilm at the West Campus Library.

Current issues, as well as some archives of
La Estella de Tucson and The Explorer can still be accessed directly through the websites of each newspaper.

Please take this into account as you are planning assignments for your classes. For more information, please feel free to contact any of the librarians here at the Downtown Campus Library (x7267).

Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.

8 Days and Counting Until Library Moves!

In 8 days the Library is moving. The Library will be closed November 30th & December 1st, reopening December 2nd in the Amethyst Room.

We are finalizing our list of items to take. Come and be sure your courses are represented! (We are beginning to feel like Santa - making a list, checking it it twice...)

Faculty checklist...
  • be sure someone from your discipline comes to the library for book selection. It only takes a few minutes of your time to wander in our circulating section and identify books to move with us to the Amethyst Room. Don't wait for someone else to do it. You don't have to be a depart chair. Come down to ensure your course(s) are represented. (Remember, what we don't take goes into storage and is not accessible until we return in June 2010!)
  • schedule your Spring library sessions once you have a date. We will be coming to YOUR class to do the sessions, so less disturbance for you and your students!
Be sure to remind your students that...
  • the Computer Commons will be closed November 23rd -24th, reopening in the Amethyst Room on Wednesday November 25th. They may need to make arrangements to visit other campuses during those two days if they need to work on a paper
  • Computer Commons and Library hours will remain the same: Monday - Friday 8am - 9pm, Friday 8am - 5pm, Saturday 9am - 3pm
  • your course reserves will still be available in the library and then in the Amethyst Room
If you have any questions, please feel free to call us at 206-7267, or feel free to come in.

LIBRARY MOVE BEGINS NOV 30th!

Just 12 days and we begin our move! We will be closed Monday and Tuesday, November 30th and December 1st. We expect to reopen on Wednesday, December 2nd.

(The Computer Commons will move the week before - Monday and Tuesday, November 23 & 24, and reopen on Wednesday, November 25th.)

  • If you haven't visited the library yet to select the items for our core collection, the items we DEFINITELY need to take, please do so ASAP. Our selection needs to finish up soon, so we can amend the catalog to indicate what will be in storage. (Remember: if the items are noted as "Storage", they are unavailable.)
  • Please remind your students to start their research as soon as possible for the largest selection of items.
  • If you want to be sure to receive all of our messages, click on this link Posts (Atom) , then on the new page, click on "Subscribe Now" button.

The Downtown Campus Library is moving! Here is what you need to know...

  • Collection Selection Begins next week! Starting November 2nd, we are inviting faculty to come into the library to look over our items and identify any item we DEFINITELY need to take. As you know the Amethyst Room is much smaller than our current space, so unfortunately, some items will need to be stored. Stored items will NOT be available while we are in the Amethyst Room! Be sure the items your students need next semester is available by coming to the library and selecting items to go with us.
  • We will be closed the week of November 30th while we move. There is a good chance we will be open towards the end of the week. If so, an email will go out announcing we are open.
  • Course Reserves will still be available! If you would like an item on course reserve it is always recommended to do it earlier than later, as the volume gets to the point where we can no longer guarantee a 24 turnaround on having it available to students. Also, if you have VHS tapes on course reserve, we will be contacting you. The Amethyst Room will not have a VHS player and students will have to be accommodated elsewhere.
  • Next semester we will be coming to your classrooms for bibliographic instruction. Schedule your Spring 2010 sessions as soon as you know your dates!
  • Please remind your students of these important dates!
As always, i f you have any questions, please feel free to contact the library at 206-7267 or just stop by!
